Website Redesign Cost in Canada: What a Quote Should Include (2026)

Most price guides I read cover new builds, not redesigns. See what moves a redesign quote, what it should list and where my prices fit.

Ask what a website redesign costs and you get either a wide range ($3,000 to $20,000 and up) or "it depends". Most of those website redesign cost numbers describe building a new site, not rebuilding one you already have. That is why two quotes for the same business can look so far apart.

Short answer: a redesign has no single price, because it depends on how much of your old site you keep. The Canadian price guides I read price new builds, at about $3,000 to $8,000 for a small business site (Impeka, 2026). What moves a redesign quote is page count, new writing and photos, custom features and the redirects that protect your old addresses. I quote a redesign up front, in writing, before any work starts.

A calm abstract scene of an old paper page layout beside a fresh blank one being sketched, representing the cost of a website redesign for a small business.
The question behind the price: how much of the old page do you keep?

Why does one redesign cost so much more than another?

Price follows how much of the old site you keep. A redesign that keeps your text, your photos and your page structure and only fixes the design is a smaller job than one where every page is rewritten. Four things move the number: how many pages there are, whether the writing and photos are new or reused, whether you need custom features such as booking, and whether the old page addresses are moved over properly.

The average cost of a website redesign is hard to pin down for that reason. I looked at what Canadian studios publish, and most of it is about new sites. Here is what each page says, as of 26 October 2026.

What Canadian price guides say, and what they cover. Vendor marketing figures, not what anyone paid. CAD unless marked.

Me, new websites$1,000 Starter (2 to 5 pages), $2,000 Business (5 to 8), $5,000 Flagship (8 or more)Fixed packages for a new site. A redesign is quoted separately

Three of those guides give no separate redesign range, and the one that does gives it in euros. The only Canadian dollar redesign figure is a single online shop example. So a redesign range in Canadian dollars is rarer than it looks. For new-site ranges, I wrote what a website costs in Canada.

What should a website redesign quote include?

A good quote lists its lines, so you can compare two of them side by side. This is the website redesign cost breakdown I would want to see:

  • Pages, and what happens to each. Keep, rewrite, merge or drop. This is the biggest driver.
  • Writing. Who writes the new text, you or the quote.
  • Photos and graphics. Yours, or sourced, and who pays for them.
  • Design and mobile layout. The part most quotes lead with.
  • Custom features and forms. Booking, quote forms, anything beyond brochure pages. Often optional.
  • Redirects. A map of every old address to its new one, and who checks it after launch.
  • Analytics and Google. Analytics, Search Console and your Google Business Profile re-checked after launch.
  • Monthly costs, on their own line. Hosting, domain and anything monthly. I cover them in hosting and Care.
  • Approvals and extras. Who signs off what, and what an extra costs.

The redirect line is the one most quotes leave out. Google's Site Moves and Migrations page (updated 20 August 2026) says "it's important to map your old site's URLs to the URLs for the new site". It recommends permanent redirects such as 301 and 308, says they "don't cause a loss in PageRank", and says to keep them "generally at least 1 year". That does not promise a better ranking. It means that if the quote has no redirect line, ask why. The builder sets them up. Your job is to ask for the map. For more on the risk, see my website redesign page.

If a quote can't answer those nine lines, that tells you something. My list of questions to ask a web designer goes further.

Is a redesign cheaper than starting over?

Sometimes. It depends on what is wrong with the old site. If your pages still bring in calls and the text is good, but the site is slow, dated or hard to use on a phone, keep the content and redo the design. There are fewer writing and photo lines, so the quote is smaller. If the text is out of date, the services have changed or the photos are old, you are paying for writing and photos, not just design, and the price grows.

If the platform is the problem (it is hard to edit, or you feel locked in), moving platforms is a rebuild plus a redirect job, so price it that way. If the site is one to three pages with no traffic, starting over costs about the same as a redesign, and you shouldn't pay to "preserve" nothing. A cheaper redesign is not a better one. A cheap quote that leaves out the redirect map or the writing just moves the cost to you later.

Here is one I did. I redesigned a website for an independent insurance brokerage. Each of the nine kinds of insurance they arrange got its own clear page, enquiries go through one simple form, and I kept the old page addresses. Before any redesign, find out who holds your domain, and see how long a build takes so the timeline doesn't surprise you.

Where do I fit, and what would I charge for a redesign?

I price a redesign by what is in it, so I look at your site first, then quote it up front, in writing, before any work starts. The full job is on my website redesign page. For how I price websites in general, see what each package includes and costs. Hosting is free with SSL, and you only pay for your own domain, about $15 to $25 a year. Care at $49 a month is optional.

You may not need me. If the site is fine and only needs a new photo or a change of hours, that is a small edit, not a redesign. If you only need a one-page presence, a builder like Squarespace may be enough. If you would like a second pair of eyes first, I can record a short video on what is putting customers off and what I would fix. It is free, with no obligation, and you can ask for a free website review.

What to do this week:

  • List the pages that get you calls today.
  • Gather the writing and photos you already have.
  • Ask every quote for the redirect map and a line-by-line list.
  • Check who holds your domain.

Questions people ask

Is a website redesign cheaper than a new website?

Not automatically. If you keep the text, photos and page structure, there is less to write and build, so it can cost less. If most of the content changes, the price is close to a new build, and the redirect work is extra.

What does a website redesign cost on Wix, WordPress or Shopify?

The platform changes the tools, not the questions: pages, new writing, photos, features, redirects and who does the work. Guides price platform-specific redesigns very differently, so compare quotes by what each lists, not by platform.

Are there ongoing costs after a redesign?

Yes: your own domain (about $15 to $25 a year), hosting and any updates. With me hosting is free with SSL and Care at $49 a month is optional. See hosting and Care, and ask any designer to put monthly items on a separate line.

Can a website redesign be claimed as a business expense?

I can't give tax advice, and the treatment can depend on how the site is used. Ask your accountant, and check the Canada Revenue Agency's own guidance.
